PS5 and Xbox Series X market analysis

Fans are on edge, waiting for the remarkable PS5 and Xbox Series X to come out this year. There is not much to say regarding the launch date of either of the consoles. However, that doesn’t stop analysts from sharing their thoughts regarding how the market plays out.

This article is based on Piers Harding-Rolls opinion. He is the Ampere Analysis’ research director for games and just posted a report regarding this topic. Where does the console market stand? How is the release of the next-gen consoles going to affect the market? Let’s find out.

PS5 and Xbox Series X market analysis

According to people within the game industry, the console market is in decline. However, Harding-Rolls believes that the next-gen console models will secure this form of gaming for at least the next generation. You can clearly see his point by looking at the new game system, improved hardware, as well as software.

But, he also admits that the future of this form of gaming doesn’t look very promising.

“While the market is still substantial and likely to be consistently large at least during the next console life cycle, what has been proven over the last decade is that even with significant resources ploughed into growing adoption on a global basis, including more serious entry into a series of additional territories, substantial hardware unit sales growth for Sony and Microsoft combined has not materialised,” Harding-Rolls said.

Sony vs. Microsoft sales

Although the next-gen console is more evolved in technology, Harding-Rolls expects to see a slight decline in sales. Last year, 109 million consoles were sold from both Sony and Microsoft combined. However, this year, the analyst says that both companies will sell only 103 million units combined.

Harding-Rolls expects to see quite a big difference between the two consoles sale. By the end of the year 2024, Sony is said to sell about 66 million units. On the other hand, Microsoft is expected to sell just 37 million units.

Still, this big difference between the PS5 and Xbox Series X sales won’t be very noticeable in the beginning. Sony is expected to sell 4.6 million units this year. On the other hand, Microsoft is said to sell only 3.3 million units.

In terms of the value, we can expect both consoles to cost between $450 and $500.
