Top Rated War Movies Based on Real Events – Trailers and Info

Whether we like it or not, war represents a crucial chapter of the history of humanity. Many war movies had been made, and a good part of them are inspired by real events. …or at least that’s what the producers want us to believe.

Regardless of how inspired by true events those movies really are, they’re all amazing productions that we can learn something from. Feel free to check out our randomly chosen list of top rated movies that feature both the horrors of war and historical events:

Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

World War II American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss served during the Battle of Okinawa and totally refused to touch the gun due to his Christian beliefs. Instead, he focuses more on rescuing people from the battlefield and becomes the first man in American history who receives the Medal of Honor without firing a single shot.

Hacksaw Ridge is directed by Mel Gibson, and it’s rated as 8.1 on IMDb.

Pearl Harbor (2001)

Pearl Harbor represents a story of war and romance mixed in with history. Two lifelong friends and a nurse are caught up in the horrors of war and love. Pearl Harbor is one of Ben Affleck’s best movies, and it was directed by Michael Bay. The rating for this film on IMDb is only 6.1, and the description writes:

Pearl Harbor is a classic tale of romance set during a war that complicates everything. It all starts when childhood friends Rafe and Danny become Army Air Corps pilots and meet Evelyn, a Navy nurse. Rafe falls head over heels and he and Evelyn and Rafe hook up. Then Rafe volunteers to go fight in Britain, and Evelyn and Danny get transferred to Pearl Harbor. While Rafe is off fighting, suddenly one morning comes the air raid we now know as “Pearl Harbor.”

Full Metal Jacket (1987)

If you’re willing to see war drama, comedy, and total dehumanization, this movie is a must! As the IMDb description says:

A two-segment look at the effect of the military mindset and war itself on Vietnam era Marines. The first half follows a group of recruits in boot camp under the command of the punishing Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. The second half shows one of those recruits, Joker, covering the war as a correspondent for Stars and Stripes, focusing on the Tet offensive.

Full Metal Jacket was directed by Stanley Kubrick, it scores 8.3 on IMDb, and it’s based on the novel “The Short Timers” written by Gustav Hasford. The author drew inspiration from his experience in Vietnam while he was a Marine correspondent with the 1st Marine Division. Therefore, we could say that this movie was also inspired by true events.

Behind Enemy Lines (2001)

The fighter navigator Chris Burnett wanted to experience something else besides the flying recon missions. He finds himself flying over war-torn Bosnia. Both Burnett and the pilot Stackhouse suddenly get shot down. Burnett finds himself alone and trying to outrun a whole army.

Behind Enemy Lines is rated as 6.4 on IMDb, and it was directed by John Moore.

Inglorious Basterds (2009)

Nazis occupy France during World War II, and a group of Jewish Americans aims to take down Hitler’s regime and terror once and for all. The movie is a delightful combination of comedy, war drama, and Brad Pitt’s Italian speech with an American accent. We’re not sure how much is Inglorious Basterds inspired by real events, but it’s surely worth giving a chance.

The director for this movie is Quentin Tarantino, and the rating on IMDb is pretty significant: 8.3.
