5 Things ‘Dragon Ball Super’ Did Better Than ‘Dragon Ball Z’

Without a shadow of a doubt, the Dragon Ball Super anime had its flaws. The power scaling was ruined, the animation didn’t look good for the most part of the series, some of Goku’s opponents were bland and boring, Vegeta became a lot less important than he was, and so on. A lot of Dragon Ball fans got angry at the series, claiming that it doesn’t deserve to be the continuation of the legendary Dragon Ball Z.

Without wanting to contradict the pissed off fans when it comes to the flaws mentioned above, the purpose of this article is just to show several things that Dragon Ball Super did better than Dragon Ball Z.

5. More humor

We can all remember that back in the old days, in the first Dragon Ball anime when Goku was a kid, there was a lot more humor than it was in Dragon Ball Z. Things like Goku being very goofy and not knowing very basic stuff, Master Roshi being an old pervert and getting punched by women, Yamcha having a huge weakness with beautiful women, and so on.

Such moments were left aside almost totally in Dragon Ball Z, as the show was focusing more on a serious vibe. Dragon Ball Super tried to bring both comedy and thriller to the show, and it did a decent job.

4. More fighting in base form

Remember back in Dragon Ball Z how Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, or Trunks behave in the battles? They had to go Super Saiyans almost every single time, while this didn’t happen in Super. These warriors already have plenty of power in their base form, and everybody knows it.

Dragon Ball Super made the good characters to take advantage as much as possible of their base form, especially in the Tournament Of Power.

Dragon Ball Super’s logic seems very accurate at this point: why transform into a Super Sayian or Super Sayian Blue while you have more power in your base form than Cell or Majin Buu?

3. Stronger characters

Of course, some Dragon Ball fans might find this one ridiculous. But let’s not forget that the Dragon Ball franchise, in general, is about power, training, and constantly getting stronger to be able to match bigger threats.

Therefore, Goku, Vegeta, and other good characters achieved power levels way higher than those from Dragon Ball Z. They now have Super Sayian Blue and Super Sayian God forms, while Goku has the greatest of them all: Ultra Instinct. Dragon Ball Super also brought far stronger villains like Zamasu and Goku Black.

Last but not least, let’s not forget about the deities from Super, like Beerus, Champa, Toppo, Whis, Grand Priest, and many others. Dragon Ball Super brought the power heights at entirely different levels, even though the anime had trouble with keeping them ‘credible’ (by the way of ruining the power scaling mentioned above).

2. No good character died

In Dragon Ball Z and also in the first Dragon Ball series, many of the good characters died and had to be brought back to life by their friends using the dragon balls. This includes Goku twice, Master Roshi, Krillin, Piccolo, Vegeta, Tien, Yamcha, and so on. Even the whole world with all its inhabitants had to be brought back into existence with the dragon balls.

Many fans are claiming that it’s a good thing that Super didn’t kill any of the good characters. Having to bring back someone from the dead seems ‘unrealistic,’ even for an animated show. However, Dragon Ball Super did bring back Frieza from the dead twice.

1. The necessity of fighting opponents that weren’t actually evil

This one simply has to take the cake. If we look in Dragon Ball Z, the good guys had to fight opponents that were mostly evil and willing to destroy the Earth or kill our heroes. We can include Raditz, Nappa, Vegeta when he first came to Earth, Frieza’s soldiers including the Gyniu Force, Frieza himself, the Androids, Cell, Dabura, Majin Buu, and so on.

Dragon Ball Super managed to bring a whole different perspective of the opponents that Goku, Vegeta, and the other good characters had to face. The God of Destruction Beerus wasn’t evil, but he wanted to destroy the Earth simply because a balance in the Universe had to be maintained. Jiren, Hit, Toppo, Dyspo, Bergamo, Lavender, Caulifa, Kale and other fighters from the Tournament Of Power simply wanted to fight for the survival of their own universes and defeat Goku and the gang during a fair fight, with no intention to kill.

Zeno, who is the biggest deity, only wanted to initiate the Tournament Of Power and to get the strongest warriors to fight simply for the sheer pleasure of watching good fights. Dragon Ball Super has the great merit of showing the Dragon Ball franchise that the good guys like Goku, Vegeta, or Piccolo can still fight with everything they have even though their main opponents don’t plan to kill and destroy. Of course, characters like Goku Black and Zamasu were exceptions.

Besides, this different perspective can also open ways for those not-actually-evil characters to return to the franchise and engage in even more powerful fights along with Goku and Vegeta, and where the stakes are also higher. Who knows, maybe they’ll even fight for the salvation of the Multiverse, including the twelve Universes from Dragon Ball Super. Whis and the Grand Priest are a lot stronger, but they have other occupations instead of fighting.

However, Dragon Ball Super still has time to fix a lot of its issues and prove once more that it’s worth watching. The show will come back anytime soon, considering that the manga is very active.
